[Interview] YoonMirae Opens Up About Her Background, MFBTY, and the Current Korean Hip-Hop Scene

[From major French publication, Liberation.]

Yoon Mirae, famous female rapper in South Korea, co-founder of Feel Ghood Music:

We were warned not to take pictures from her manager. She is without make up, wearing just jeans and a hoodie. YoonMiRae meets us at her label’s office north of Seoul. Born from an African-American father and a Korean mother, she’s the country’s most famous female rapper. Also known as Tasha or T, the 34-year old artist is sometimes compared to Lauryn Hill. She is married to Tiger JK, with whom she works regularly. With label mate and rapper Bizzy, they created a group named MFBTY and their own label, Feel Ghood Music.

MFBTY (which stands for “My Fan are Better Than Yours”) have just released their first full length album, Wondaland.

Why did you establish your label in UiJeongBu, far from the media and music industry?

T: My father was an American soldier. He met my mother in Uijeongbu district when he was stationed at the base here, so I lived most of my life here. I like the atmosphere since it’s a mix of city and country.

How was it when you first debuted in Korea? At the time there was more prejudice towards mixed people.

T: I experienced discrimination from both sides. In the US, I wasn’t Black enough. In Korea, they called me “Yankee.” In primary and middle school, there wasn’t a day when I wasn’t reminded I was only half Korean. People stared at me. It was really hard. My first label asked me to hide my father’s skin color. They told me, “We will say you have far African-Americans origins.” Sometimes stylists tried to make me look “more Korean.” Later, when African-American music was the trend, they accepted my darker skin color. I was angry and lost at the same time. I put this anger into my songs.

Tell us about Korean hip-hop in the 90’s…

T: When I debuted, hip-hop was like a secret society, a small circle of people where everything was word of mouth. Tiger JK helped me discover underground battles in Hongdae and Sinchon. The rest of society thought rappers were all gangsters. Thankfully, today things have changed.

To the point now every boy band has a rapper!

T: To be honest, this trend irritates me. Some are clearly formatted, but sometimes when I turn on the TV, I see one with good potential. Because hip-hop is now trendy, we need a bigger underground scene to show various types of hip-hop styles. However, finding this type of scene today is more difficult. In the media, there is only one style: pop. If you don’t sign with a big label like YG or SM, your chances of appearing on TV become slim. It’s disappointing, and I don’t think it’s going to change soon.

What do you thing of shows with rappers, like Unpretty Rapstar?

T: I know this is going to sound shocking, but I don’t really get a chance to watch the show. However, that doesn’t mean I don’t support my fellow femcees. I hear some of the contestants are very talented, and that I was a major influence for some of them. I am thankful for that. Whenever I’m asked about how I feel about being the only femcee, my answer was and always will be, “I’m not the only one.” There’s a lot of talented ones out here. You just don’t get to see them because either they want to stay underground so they don’t “sell out” by signing to a huge label, or they want to blow up, but feel they will have to give up creative control of their music if they sign to those large labels. We don’t see these artists because we’re either not really looking, or because stations won’t play their songs.

Does Korean rap focus on specific topics?

T: In Korea, like elsewhere, rap discusses many things including politics and society. However, there is censorship here even though we’re a democracy. There are a lot of things rappers can’t say, but the censors are more lenient when a pop star says it.

In 2002, the first track of my “Gemini” hip-hop album was censored by the media because I said “show me your belly button.” However, at the time, there were pop songs on radio with more explicit lyrics. Fortunately, things have been changing for the better as hip-hop has become more recognized.

[News] Bizzy Bizzionary: An Inside Look At MFBTY’s Third Member

11081320_1024669794213151_3475070354372774406_n

It is March 16, 2015 and a rapper is seen quietly psyching himself up, saying “I can do it” inside a restaurant in Gangnam. He has his game face on. It’s 3 days before his new track comes out. Is he anticipating taking the number 1 spot onthe music charts?

Not exactly. It’s because he has nominated himself to be the MC for their album release party on the 18th. It is very rare to see the artists themselves MC’ing their album release event. It’s usually a professional MC that manages the event ensuring everything flows smoothly. However this rapper is confident he can do a good job.

He is MFBTY’s Bizzy. Haven’t heard of him? It’s the person beside Tiger JK and Yoon Mi Rae. Yes, it is clear that compared to the other two artists, he is not as well known. This is the reason why he volunteered to MC for the night, as this was an excellent opportunity for the media and the general public to hear and notice Bizzy on the stage. He even visited the promo office to receive 1:1 media training and to practice. All preparations were done. All he could do was wait.

Now let’s switch it up a bit. MFBTY’s first full album “Wondaland” was released on March 19, 2015. They received the top spots on 4 respective music charts. However, there were some comments regarding their results saying they were not as good because fans were not aware of the project group MFBTY. In other words, if they knew Tiger JK & Yoon Mi Rae were in it, people were more likely to reach out for the tracks.

This makes sense. Many people do know Tiger JK & Yoon Mi Rae, but MFBTY, that’s a different story. So why are they calling themselves MFBTY? Because other than “My Fans [Are] Better Than Yours,” it also means, “Mother Freakin’ Bizzy Tiger YoonMiRae.

10313328_1024669837546480_2930393204707924928_n

Bizzy is used to hearing all the ‘usual’ questions, e.g. “what are you doing between that married couple?” Even the writer of this article (Osen reporter) asked him, “So what do you do in MFBTY?”.Although this might have been hurtful to others, Bizzy politely replied “Oh, this and that.”

Within his record label (Feel Ghood Music, which he, Tiger JK & Yoon Mi Rae created) he is known as General Manager, Mr. Park. As their record label just turned two, they are still in their establishment phase and will be needing hands on assistance every now and then. These days, General Manager Mr. Park, (aka Bizzy) is helping with the promotional team which is a big help to them.

It was the morning of the day when the album,”Wondaland,” was going to be announced for the first time to the media and general public. Needless to say, Tiger JK & Yoon Mi Rae had high expectations.

Unfortunately, the MC for the event was Tiger JK. Bizzy froze midway through and Tiger JK had to step in. However, the short amount of time Bizzy was MCing, it left a positive impression on the media personnel.

Rappers tell their life stories on the stages with their flows. Bizzy, a hip hop veteran is always explosive on stage. However, when he needs to talk, he freezes.

There’s a short video clip recorded from KBS, “Yoon Do Hyun’s Love Letter” that is legendary. Yoon Do Hyun asks Bizzy a question and he does not respond back. One may think it was all part of his character, a certain type of as swag, whereas others deducted that maybe he was unable to speak at that moment because he was embarrassed. Most recently on MNet’s, “4KindsShow” he spoke less than Rap Monster (BTS) who featured on their album.

Those that are in Bizzy’s close circles call him, “The music industry’s nuclear bomb with no explosion” much to Bizzy’s frustration. After the album release event, Bizzy took up boxing again (which he stopped doing for a short time). While speaking of boxing, Bizzy commented, Yoon Mi Rae’s punches hurt the most (to which Tiger JK agreed).

His long awaited solo album

There’s a good chance Bizzy’s solo album will drop in the first half of 2015. With regards to his signature energetic flow and powerful performances, he commented “To survive between Tiger JK and Yoon Mi Rae, I formed a habit of shouting when performing.”

In his solo album, there is an expected music style change. With jazz and R&B on his listening menu lately, he has told the writer that his music style has toned down a little bit. But don’t worry, his powerful performances will not disappear.

Bizzy was offered a lot of Korean idol spots when he returned to Korea from New Zealand. Amongst his nicknames is “Hiphop Gong Yoo,” which might sounds like it refers to the actor Gong Yoo, however this nickname was given to him after people saw him on, “Come To Play.” His positive energy is addictive and one of his greatest assets. He stated that he is at his happiest right now.

Rapper, Sean2Slow gave Bizzy his name a long time ago wishing him to be busy. When asked whether he is busy, he smiled and answered, “Much busier than before!” When you search his name, soybean curd come up first (food product, same Korean spelling as Bizzy written in Korean) he is just happy that there are a lot of “Rapper Bizzy” related posts nowadays.

This is Bizzy, who’s happily single, but would love to raise a family one day.

[video] MFBTY Second Teaser Released: “Bang Diggy Bang Bang”

MFBTY released a teaser for the second title song, “Bang Diggy Bang Bang.” In contrast to “Bucku Bucku/Shy Shy,” this song has a more playful tone, with our trio even busting some dance moves in a colorful setting. BTS’ RapMon makes a quick cameo again on this one, and KimBanJang from Windy City is seen playing with what looks like live drums (not live as in music, but live as in living!) If you’re wondering what the pillows are about, this is an element that was developed in the original MFBTY joke, pre-debut days.

Less than 48 hours to go!

[news] Full List of #MFBTYAlbum Features: RapMon, JeonInKwon, Yong JunHyung, Son SeungYun, Dok2, Windy City, EE, Dino-J

The line up for MFBTY’s album is now complete.

Feel Ghood Music announced today, March 11th, the full line up for MFBTY’s album. Previously, it was revealed JeonInKwon, BTS’ Rap Monster, Beast’s YongJunhyung, Dok2, and Son Seung Yun would feature on the album. Today, they revealed Windy City’s lead singer, Kim Ban Jang, EE, and new artist, Dino-J, will also participate, bringing together a power house team of artists. MFBTY’s mission as a project group is not to create a specific genre of music, but to create music that just feels good, at home or at a large performance. This combination of different styles will undoubtedly create a memorable album.

YunJoung Lee, from the former punk rock band Pipi Band, joined with husband, Lee HyunJoon to form EE, sometimes referred to as EETOTALART.  They combine electronic sound with artistic performances, thus their stage name. They were the first Korean artists to participate in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, 2011. The duo represented Korea for Amnesty International’s “Peace” project that promoted human rights. More recently, the duo has been a grand success on the world music scene, receiving an invitation to the South by Southwest 2015 (SXSW), the largest music festival in the world.

Kim BanJang is a vocalist and percussionist of the band Windy City, which debuted as a member of band, Assoto Union. In 2013 , Windy City participated in the Sierra Nevada World Music, and massive music conference and festival, South by Southwest (SXSW) .

In addition to these artists, the album will feature artist and rookie Feel Ghood Music producer, Dino- J.

MFBTY debuted with a mini album, “Sweet Dream,” in 2013. They released an album under the Drunken Tiger name in 2013 called, “The Cure,” and then rebranded themselves under YoonMiRae’s name, releasing single, “Angel.” The upcoming March album marks the first official full length MFBTY album under their own name.

[news] Rapper, DOK2, Returns to Collab With Mentors; Will Feature on MFBTY Album

Tiger JK dropped a not-so-hidden secret about the latest person to feature on the MFBTY album. On March 9th, Tiger tweeted, “Thank you to all the people who helped with MFBTY’s debut album!” Dok2 retweeted it with an emoticon similar to a bow gesture. Tiger then replied,  “Don’t be a spoiler, brother,” hinting to fans that Dok2 did some sort of collaboration with them. We have confirmed that Dok2 will feature on the album.

dok2reply

inceptionspoiler
Dok2 and Tiger JK have a friendship that dates back to 2006, when Dok2 was still a (very) young rapper coming up. Dok2 and then partner, Microdot, formed a duo called AllBlack. They became part of The Movement Crew, a collaboration of underground hip-hop artists led by Drunken Tiger. Dok2 was already a well seasoned  artist, and soon became a producer and frequent feature for Drunken Tiger.

The last time the two collaborated was for Dok2’s song, “Flow To Flow.” Dok2’s return to the MFBTY album marks 4 years since the two have recorded together.

Dok2 is currently the co-founder of 1LLIONAIRE RECORDS, which houses himself, The Quiett, and Beenzino. It is one of the most successful Korean hip-hop labels.
