R.I.P. Suh Byung Hoo, Tiger JK’s father

Image

It is with great sadness that I must write that Tiger JK’s father, Suh Byung Hoo, passed away today at 4pm. Feel Ghood Music stated that he passed away in his UiJeongBu home, with JK and Tasha watching over him.

Mr. Suh, 72, was battling lung cancer since he was diagnosed in July 2013.

He was more affectionately known to fans as “G-pa,” short for grandpa, and reference to his relationship to grandson, Jordan. While G-pa was well-known to many music professionals, he became a Drunken Tiger fan favorite once he created his Twitter account, SmilinGrandaddy.

Mr. Suh was an inspiration to many. He graduated with a degree in Economics from Korea’s top university, Seoul National University. In 1968, he worked as a journalist at Kyunghyang Newspaper, writing about both Western and Korean pop. In 1978, he started working at Joong-Ang News and was the head writer of the music column. From 1981 to 1996, he was a correspondent for Billboard Magazine. He is credited as the country’s first pop columnist and the first person to introduce Korean music into a Western publication.

Even in his later years, he was always listening to music, old and new, and utilized social media sites such as Twitter to communicate with people worldwide. He was not afraid to interact with others, and openly shared his opinions on various topics. He was a well-liked gentleman. Fans took a special liking to him because of his sociability, humor, and genuine care for others. On paper, he was the Chief Advisor to the Feel Ghood label, but he enjoyed giving guidance to anyone who asked.

Tiger JK, who had a very strong bond with his father, released an album after a 4 year and 3 months hiatus aptly titled “살자 – salja – Let’s Live/The Cure.” Tiger JK dedicated the title track, appropriately named the same as the album, to his father. The title track contains positive messages telling listeners that all things under the sun are your friends and they are protecting you.

Mr Suh showed dedication to the Korean Martial art of Taekwondo. He worked as an Editor of World Taekwondo, an international English Taekwondo Federation magazine, while also working as a General Managing Editor for “음악세계 –Music World” magazine.

Additionally, he was well known in the Buddhist community. He had a significant interest in Tantric Buddihism and held office in Shakyamuni Buddhist Center Sininjong, Vajrayana Buddhism. He lived at a Buddhist temple hidden in the Korean mountains in the later years of his life.

Finally, Mr. Suh was a teacher at heart. He published a number of books on Buddhism and gave occasional lectures on music.

The wake is being held at Korea Cancer Center Hospital in Nowon, Seoul, and the funeral will conclude on the 3rd at 9:30 AM KST.

My greatest condolences go out to my Drunken Tiger/MFBTY fam as they go through this difficult time. Father, grandfather, writer, teacher, intellectual, pioneer, friend. Rest in peace, G-Pa.

Happy 1 year anniversary, MFBTY! Looking Back On Our First Year…

Image

January 21st, 2014 – Today marks a full year since Bizzy, Tiger JK, and Yoon MiRae collaborated to form the group, MFBTY (My Fans [are] Better Than Yours). The collaboration was initially a temporary project, but unofficially became their stage moniker as the three artists continue to perform together to this day. Although the release of Drunken Tiger’s 9th album, “The Cure,” rebranded the three as solo artists again, fans still recognize the three as their collaborative name. They are definitely here to stay, so let’s look back on the past year’s moments that made an imprint in our minds.

01/21/13 – MFBTY officially debuts with “Sweet Dream” digital EP

Image

This day marked the official debut of the group and the release of their first EP record, “Sweet Dream.” Since only a limited amount of EPs were actually printed, the majority of the promo was online via their music video produced by Lumpens. “Sweet Dreams” release also featured the debut of their new DJ, Smellz, who specializes in a mix of hip-hop, house, and other club style music.

01/27/2013  MFBTY Invited to France to rep Korean hip-hop

midem-2013-1

One of the world’s largest music industry conference’s, MIDEM, invited MFBTY to represent Korean hip-hop for the global music community. In a rare instance, we got to see the three become “industry panelists” and answer an open Q&A with attendees. We also saw Bizzy bust out his French, and Tiger revealing how die-hard of a shopper Tasha is.

07/23/13 – MFBTY leaves Jungle Entertainment to form Feel Ghood Music

jkprisonbreak

After 6 years with self-made label, Jungle Entertainment, MFBTY left the label to form their own independent label, Feel Ghood Music. Unlike in his former label, Tiger JK gave himself full executive power and staffed his company with mainly his most trusted family and peers. The reasons for their leave from Jungle are still unofficially stated, but when asked recently about it, JK simply replied, “The music industry is shady.”

07/25/2013 – Performing for Quincy Jones

quincyjonesmfbty

Legendary song writer and multi-grammy award winner, Quincy Jones, held a special concert in Korea to celebrate his 80th birthday. Amongst the guest performers were MFBTY, whom he previously praised when he met them in 2011. This was their first performance after announcing the opening of Feel Ghood Music.

09/11/2013 – MFBTY redebuts under Drunken Tiger with Yoon MiRae & Bizzy at Google Play Concert

google concert

Technology has made it possible to put on the most unique concerts. Thanks to Google, the September Beyond KPOP concert made it possible for fans to be at a live show without actually being there. Hundreds of MFBTY loyalists woke up at 5AM EST just to make sure MFBTY would see their faces on the live screen during the show.

09/13/2013 – DT 9th album, “The Cure,” drops

20130923-154649.jpg

How does an album have virtually no mainstream promotion and still make it to the #1 on five major music downloading sites? Claim it as Drunken Tiger’s 9th album (after 4 years), add Yoon MiRae and Bizzy, and the byproduct is magic. This record was a complete 180 from past Drunken Tiger albums: chill, sentimental, simple. However, its overall message is what makes this album one of the top DT albums ever released. The album was a sudden project that was inspired by JK’s father, Suh Byung Hoo, who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer two months prior to the release. JK had searched for the one inspirational moment for him to drop an album, and this was it. The lyrics to the title single, “The Cure,” encourages those physically and emotionally down to pick up their strength and keep going.  Since the group was also starting as a fresh independent label, this was a metaphorical message for themselves that they could overcome the struggles that many new indie labels endure.

11/17/2013 – Kollaboration Star makes MFBTY’s first US performance official

camp34

The trio has performed in the US before, but only as solo artists. Kollaboration Star, which showcases rising US Asian-American talent, invited MFBTY to be their guest celebrity performers in November. In a unique twist, MFBTY was given an hour or so long set, performing new and classic songs with their full band. Only fans in Korea are given that privilege, and even then, it’s sparse. Other performers who joined them on stage were David Choi and “Jetpack” feature, Styliztik Jones. This was the first time that they performed non-single songs from the 9th album, such as “Time Travel.” Their LA trip also led to many international opportunities, such as the invite from FuseTV for an interview.

There were other great moments in this past year, but these were the biggest moments that did it for me. Happy 1 year, fam.

[video] In case you missed it: MFBTY interview on MNET’s Danny in LA

During their week in LA, MFBTY stopped by MNET’s “Danny From LA” for a brief chat with hosts, Danny Im and Dumbfoundead. Danny and Tiger reminisce about when they were both performing in the 90s (Danny when he was in 1TYM, Tiger JK as part of the group, Drunken Tiger). The two were ironically intimidated by each other. For the impatient, you can fast forward to 17:40 to get straight into the interview.

P.S. The intro segment of Dumbfoundead trying to teach Danny how to rap is classic.

[photos/video] Drunken Tiger, Yoon MiRae, Bizzy at Kollaboration Star

camp21

November 16th, 2013 – Approximately 2 years since MFBTY crew has rocked a US show. Given the rarity the crew do shows in the US, there’s always some nervousness about how the show will go, the turn out, how fans will react. The legacy of Tiger JK is 20 years old, Drunken Tiger 14 years, Tasha 16 years, and Bizzy, the youngest… at 9 years. Most artists are lucky to stay relevant more than 2 years in the industry, but even over such a long period of time, the 3 are able to bring over 2500 people together for a show.

Kollaboration traditionally is a celebration of Asian-Americans in entertainment. Kollaboration Star focused on bringing together the show’s best performers from across the country. While the finalists brought a number of their own following, there was no doubt an overwhelming Drunken fan presence in the audience. Given Tiger’s long musical history, the age group spanned from fans in their teens and into their 30s. Both were equally filled with excitement, some waiting nearly 14 years to see Tiger perform live.

A week before the show, the crew hinted in on Twitter of a set consisting of old school classics and new songs. However, no one could have expected a DT2 classic, “Drunken Symphony,” to be the intro to the set. Bizzy and Tiger then took us 8 years forward, doing a small rendition of “내눈을 쳐다봐,” from the album.

The crew admitted that they rehearsed religiously for a month straight. Although they had 3 full rehearsals at the venue as well, they were filled with nerves. A personal twist was them doing almost the entire audience interaction in English, a treat for the most multiracial audience they have had Stateside. There is so much to rave about this whopping 2 hour and 20 minute set, including a surprise guest performance by Styliztik Jones on “Jet Pack,” an attempted new song over a Snoop Dogg instrumental, a guest collaboration with David Choi for the reggae version of “The Cure,” and the first time the crew did “첫눈이 오면 설레었던 꼬마아이 (Time Travel)” live. However, only the photos and the videos can speak to that.

P.S. The show was followed by a private meet and greet for fans who paid for the limited $200 Ultimate Fan package.

[US CONCERT] Drunken Tiger, Yoon MiRae, and Bizzy to headline Kollaboration Star (LA)

20131008-183312.jpg

There was an era where I jumped on a plane once or twice a year to make it to a Drunken Tiger concert. Face it, international gigs are a rarity for Korean artists, so diehards come far and wide to see their fave artists perform. I can only imagine who and what the November 16th show of Kollaboration star will bring. With a full one hour set, this is a show that no DT fan should miss.

“Kollaboration Star”, an annual talent competition bringing in Asian talents from all over North America, is back for a second year this year. Six finalists, five of them selected based on an online vote out of thirteen city representatives of local Kollaboration talent contests, will be competing for the national title of Kollaboration Star 2013 and a $20,000 Grand Prize. This year’s competition will also be hosted by YouTube comedian David So, with guest appearances from Paul “PK” Kim and Kollaboration alumni Mike Song and KRNFX.

“Kollaboration Star 2013″ will be held on Saturday, November 16th at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Presage packages are currently on sale, with official sales starting October 10th.

Presley packages can be accessed at http://www.kollaboration.org/presale. The ultimate fan package offers the best opportunity to spend quality time with the three artists. [photos] Shots from first live performance of “The Cure”

On October 3rd, Tiger JK, Yoon MiRae, and Bizzy had their TV debut of “The Cure,” courtesy of MBC. Contrary to their usual highly energetic set, “The Cure” live set comprises of the 3 performing behind standing mics, a first in DT history. Of course, the crowd was treated to older high energy classics, such as “Get It In,” “Good Life,” and “I Want You.” However, as always with any DT performance, expect the unexpected. JK breaks through the audience barrier and performs the song while walking through the crowd and then ending “Get It In” with him relaxing on the moving camera wheelie. See photos/video below.

P.S. My camera went out during “The Cure,” so unfortunately I don’t have the full footage! Fans will have to wait until the broadcast is released.

Drunken Tiger releases long awaited 9th album, “THE CURE” after a 4 year hiatus; dominates charts

20130923-154649.jpg

Let me first apologize for being away from this site. Some personal matters got in the way, but now I’m good! Worse comes to worse, I am always active on my Twitter account!

Anyway, on September 13th, “THE CURE” was released with a slight change in the Drunken Tiger name. After a brief stint with Tiger JK, Yoon MiRae, and Bizzy performing as MFBTY, the trio renamed themselves as “Drunken Tiger with Yoon Mirae and Bizzy.” The 9th album carries many past hits that exclusively were digital singles ( “Sweet Dream” and “Get It In”), the 2 standout tracks are “Beautiful Life” and “The Cure.” Both songs are inspired by those struggling, hopeless, and/or sick. Most of the inspiration came from JK’s past struggles and most recently his father, who was diagnosed with cancer. The song is also metaphorical of the 3 artists breaking off from their old label, Jungle Entertainment, and starting completely fresh. Challenged with the obstacles of most startup labels, the trio were somehow able to become the most downloaded digital album across all of Korea’s digital services on top of ranking in ITunes’ top hiphop album download list.

The trio also debuted their album via an interactive Google concert and 2 autograph signings. Despite what looks like success, the mass media industry has turned a blind eye to this “subtle” hit album. Echoing the early days of Drunken Tiger’s debut, JK uses it only as fuel to keep going. In true Tiger JK fashion, he admitted the album wasn’t for money or fame, but more so for his father and his fans.

This post is dedicated to JK’s father, who reinspired me to get back into the right funk!

[exclusive] HD photos/video from UiJeongBu International Music Festival

In their native town of Uijeongbu, a small city an hour out of central Seoul, Tiger JK and Yoon MiRae closed their city’s 20th International Music Festival with a special concert. While they were the main names on the bill, the two surprised the 1000+ fans by bringing fellow label mates, JoMoonGun, and new hip-hop group, MIB, to perform an extended Jungle Entertainment-only concert. As a result, their performance differed from their normal set, with even MIB members rapping the first verse of “I Want You/난 널 원해” with Tiger. Below are exclusive front row HD shots/video from the performance.

In other news, Tiger JK, Yoon MiRae, Bizzy, and MIB are to perform at Music Matters Live 2012, an annual music industry conference. This year’s conference is being held in Singapore, and will broadcast live at 9PM Korea time (8AM EST, 5AM PST).

[media] Tiger JK & Yoon MiRae Tear Down Hongdae Station (Musically)

April 28th, Hongdae Subway Station— With the fastest Internet in the world and a population open to new cellphone technology, many of the world’s wired mobile advancements are first launched in South Korea. The country’s largest cellphone carrier, SK Telecom, recently announced its phones will now offer the largest LTE (4G) data service in the country. SK’s LTE service also allows its members to stream free music from Korea’s largest online streamer, Melon, directly into their phones without using up data. SK teamed with Tiger JK to garner fans to their website, offering free concert tickets to select fans who partake in one of their online promotions.

In an effort to continuously stand out above its competitors, SK held its promotional concert in no ordinary venue. Korea is well known for its timely and convenient subway, but commuters often complain its service is not 24 hours. SK used this to their advantage, holding JK’s show at Hongdae subway station after hours. Of course, fans invited were oblivious as to how the company would pull this off. How and where would you pull off a concert in an ordinary subway station?

Outside the turnstile exits of Hongdae’s airport subway line stood a group of fans and random signage with JK’s face. The exits are wide, but still fans were left in the dark where the actual show would be. Around the ticket tables are pseudo red carpets where concert goers could take pictures with a life size JK cut out.

Fans are distracted by the cutout until 12:00pm, when the subway shuts down for the public. They are then instructed to line up near the East bound train turnstiles. At 12:30pm, the crowd is directed downstairs into an empty train, which a few minutes later suddenly closes its doors and takes surprised passengers to the next station (Digital Media City).

As the train pulls into Digital Media City, fans anticipate getting off and going to a secret location for the concert. However, the doors remain close and the lights suddenly shut off, throwing some into a panic. Dance music starts to play and SK staff walks through the train cars announcing everyone is going to a concert/party soon. Still, fans are left questioning if the concert where the venue actually is.

The train suddenly moves back west to Hongdae station, this time arriving on the West bound side of the train tracks. The doors open and a shrill of screams lets out as concert goers realize the show is on the actual platform. A mad dash to the stage occurs, passing through a now JK branded subway platform.

Fans are treated to promos featuring JK and a DJ building anticipation with recent dance hits. Around 1:30pm, JK’s DJ, DJ Juice, appears on stage and hardcore fans scream knowing the show is starting.

As usual, Bizzy starts the set and builds the energy. Bizzy’s set usually starts with “Run,” a track from  Yang Dong Geun’s  4th album which him, JK, and Tasha featured. Veteran fans know the sight of Bizzy at a show surely means JK will follow, and then after wife, Tasha/Yoon MiRae.

JK doesn’t disappoint as his joins Bizzy to perform a DT’s classic, “Do You Know Hip Hop?” As JK comes out, the barrier holding the fans back shakes. JK is the first to fully step out to the crowd, causing a panic for his bodyguards. After performing “Monster,” and entertaining the crowd with jokes, Tasha joins the crew for True Romance.

The husband/wife duo always treat the crowd to a small dance in the middle of the set.

With its peaceful melody, True Romance calms the nerves of the crowd, but gets them ready to start jumping as the trio starts the hyped “Pay Day.

However, the highlight of Tasha’s set is her online single, “Get it In.” Regardless of the crowd, “Get It In” guarantees the crowd will be jumping along with the crew mid song. (Warning: I was close to the stage, almost too close. As a result, the lights affected my camera’s focus and there are parts where it’s hard to see. I apologize!)

“Get It In,” is the apparent show closer, but fans demand the crew come back to the stage for an encore.

Soon after, the crew comes back to close with another Drunken Tiger classic, “I Want You.” Seeing the crowd enamored in the performance, JK takes the opportunity to step off stage and embed himself into the crowd. Midway through, his adrenaline tells him to take a fan’s cellphone with him, leaving her in uneasy excitement. (Again, light warning.)

Fans are always happy that JK is willing to mingle.

The crew leaves the crowd in high spirits. One fan’s love for JK is reignited to the point she wants to kiss his lifesize cut out.

And as the show ends, the subway station empties, but remnants of JK’s presence and a unique concert remain. Kudos, SK Telecom, I definitely will remain a loyal customer after this show.
